Activity Group Prizes

The SIAM Activity Group on Discrete Mathematics awards the Dénes König Prize every two years to an individual or individuals in their early career for outstanding research contributions in an area of discrete mathematics, as evidenced by a publication in a peer-reviewed journal within the three calendar years prior to the award year.Discrete mathematics includes combinatorics, graph theory, cryptography, discrete optimization, mathematical programming, coding theory, information theory, game theory, and theoretical computer science.

The SIAM Activity Group on Orthogonal Polynomials and Special Functions (SIAG/OPSF) awards the Gábor Szegö Prize every two years to one individual in their early career for outstanding research contributions in the area of orthogonal polynomials and special functions.

The SIAM Activity Group on Dynamical Systems (SIAG/DS) awards the J. D. Crawford Prize every two years to one individual for recent outstanding work on a topic in nonlinear science, as evidenced by a publication in English in a peer-reviewed journal within the four calendar years preceding the award year. The term “nonlinear science" is used in the spirit of the SIAG on Dynamical Systems conferences. Specifically, it includes dynamical systems theory and its applications as well as experiments, computations, and simulations.

The SIAM Activity Group on Dynamical Systems (SIAG/DS) awards the Jürgen Moser Lecture every two years to an individual who has made distinguished contributions to nonlinear science. The term “nonlinear science” is used in the spirit of the SIAG on Dynamical Systems conferences. Specifically, it includes dynamical systems theory and its applications as well as experiments, computations, and simulations.

The SIAM Activity Group on Nonlinear Waves and Coherent Structures (SIAG/NWCS) awards the Martin Kruskal Lecture every two years to one individual for a notable body of mathematics and contributions in the field of nonlinear waves and coherent structures. The award may be given either for a single notable achievement or for a collection of such achievements

The SIAM Activity Group on Dynamical Systems (SIAG/DS) awards the Red Sock Award for the best poster presentation in dynamical systems by a student or postdoc at the SIAM Conference on Applications of Dynamical Systems. Four awards are made at the end of the conference. Each award has equal merit. In honor of James A. Yorke, each prize winner receives a red sock as part of the award.

The SIAM Activity Group on Algebraic Geometry Agnes Szanto Early Career Prize (SI(AG)2 Agnes Szanto Early Career Prize) is awarded every two years to one outstanding early career researcher in the field of algebraic geometry and its applications for distinguished contributions to the field in the three calendar years prior to the year of the award. The contributions must be contained in a paper or papers in English in peer-reviewed journals.

The SIAM Activity Group on Analysis of Partial Differential Equations Best Paper Prize (SIAG/APDE Best Paper Prize) is awarded every two years to the author(s) of the most outstanding paper, as determined by the prize committee, on a topic in partial differential equations published in the four calendar years preceding the award year.

The SIAM Activity Group on Analysis of Partial Differential Equations Early Career Prize (SIAG/APDE Early Career Prize) is awarded every two years to an early career researcher who has made outstanding, influential, and potentially long-lasting contributions within six years of receiving the Ph.D. or equivalent degree as of January 1 of the award year. At least one of the papers containing this work must be published in English in a peer-reviewed journal or conference proceedings.

The SIAM Activity Group on Applied and Computational Discrete Algorithms Early Career Prize (SIAG/ACDA Early Career Prize) is awarded every two years to an outstanding early career researcher in the field of Applied and Computational Discrete Algorithms (ACDA) for distinguished contributions to the field in the six calendar years prior to the award year.

The SIAM Activity Group on Computational Science and Engineering Best Paper Prize (SIAG/CSE Best Paper Prize) is awarded every two years to the author(s) of the best paper, as determined by the prize committee, on the development and use of mathematical and computational tools and methods for solving problems that may arise in broad areas of science, engineering, technology, and society. The prize recognizes a paper that makes an outstanding and potentially long-lasting contribution to the field. The selection criteria emphasize multidisciplinary work opening up new areas of research, and potential broad impact, in addition to novelty, creativity, and overall scientific advancement and quality.

The SIAM Activity Group on Computational Science and Engineering Early Career Prize (SIAG/CSE Early Career Prize) is awarded every two years to one post-Ph.D. early career researcher in the field of computational science and engineering for outstanding, influential, and potentially long-lasting contributions to the field within seven years of receiving the Ph.D. or equivalent degree as of January 1 of the award year. The contributions must be contained in a paper or papers published in English in peer-reviewed journals.

The SIAM Activity Group on Control and Systems Theory Best SICON Paper Prize (SIAG/CST Best SICON Paper Prize) is awarded every two years to the authors of the two most outstanding papers, as determined by the prize committee, published in SICON in the three calendar years preceding the award year.

The SIAM Activity Group on Control and Systems Theory Prize (SIAG/CST Prize) is awarded every two years to one outstanding early career researcher for distinguished contributions to mathematical theory of systems and control in the three calendar years preceding the award year.

The SIAM Activity Group on Data Science Career Prize (SIAG/DATA Career Prize) is awarded every two years to an outstanding senior researcher who has made broad and influential contributions to the Mathematical, Statistical or Computational foundations of Data Science. The prize recognizes a research career in the Mathematics of Data Science at the highest level of achievement.

The SIAM Activity Group on Data Science Early Career Prize (SIAG/DATA Early Career Prize) is awarded every two years to an outstanding early career researcher in the field of Data Science for distinguished contributions to the field in the six calendar years prior to the award year.

The SIAM Activity Group on Financial Mathematics and Engineering Conference Paper Prize (SIAG/FME Conference Paper Prize) is awarded every two years to recognize outstanding research presented by students and postdocs at the SIAM Conference on Financial Mathematics and Engineering. Up to six finalists will be selected to present their work and up to two awards will be made at the conference. Each award has equal merit.

The SIAM Activity Group on Financial Mathematics and Engineering Early Career Prize (SIAG/FME Early Career Prize) is awarded at the SIAM Conference on Financial Mathematics and Engineering to one individual in their early career for distinguished contributions to mathematical modeling in finance in the three calendar years preceding the award year.

The SIAM Activity Group on Geometric Design Early Career Prize (SIAG/GD Early Career Prize) is awarded every two years to an early career researcher who has made outstanding, influential, and potentially long-lasting contributions within five years of receiving the Ph.D. or equivalent degree as of January 1 of the award year. The SIAM Activity Group on Imaging Sciences Best Paper Prize (SIAG/IS Best Paper Prize) is awarded every two years to the author(s) of the most outstanding paper on mathematical and computational aspects of imaging published within the four calendar years preceding the year prior to the award year. The term “imaging” can be broadly interpreted to include image formation, inverse problems in imaging, image processing, image analysis, image interpretation and understanding, computer graphics, and visualization.

The SIAM Activity Group on Imaging Sciences Early Career Prize (SIAG/IS Early Career Prize) is awarded every two years to one individual in their early career, in the field of imaging science, for distinguished contributions to the field in the three calendar years prior to the award year.

The SIAM Activity Group on Linear Algebra Best Paper Prize (SIAG/LA Best Paper Prize) is awarded every three years to the author(s) of the most outstanding paper, as determined by the selection committee, on a topic in applicable linear algebra in the four calendar years preceding the award year.

The SIAM Activity Group on Linear Algebra Early Career Prize (SIAG/LA Early Career Prize) is awarded every three years to one post-PhD early career researcher in the field of applicable linear algebra for outstanding contributions to the field within six years of receiving the Ph.D. or equivalent degree as of January 1 of the award year.

The SIAM Activity Group on Mathematics of Planet Earth Early Career Prize (SIAG/MPE Early Career Prize) is awarded every two years to an outstanding early career researcher in the field of Mathematics of Planet Earth for distinguished contributions to the field in the six calendar years prior to the award year.

The SIAM Activity Group on Mathematics of Planet Earth Prize (SIAG/MPE Prize) is awarded every two years to one individual for significant scientific work in topic areas that are relevant to the mathematics of planet earth or for sustained or seminal contributions to the scientific agenda of the SIAG/MPE.

The SIAM Activity Group on Optimization Best Paper Prize (SIAG/OPT Best Paper Prize) is awarded every three years to the author(s) of the most outstanding paper, as determined by the prize committee, on a topic in optimization published in the four calendar years preceding the award year.

The SIAM Activity Group on Optimization Early Career Prize (SIAG/OPT Early Career Prize) is awarded every three years to an outstanding early career researcher in the field of optimization for distinguished contributions to the field in the six calendar years prior to the award year.

The SIAM Activity Group on Optimization (SIAG/OPT) Test of Time Award, established in 2022, is awarded every three years to an individual or group of researchers for an outstanding single piece of work that has had significant and sustained influence on the field of optimization over a time period of at least 10 years preceding the year of the award. The SIAM Activity Group on Uncertainty Quantification Early Career Prize (SIAG/UQ Early Career Prize) is awarded every two years to one individual in their early career for outstanding research contributions in the field of uncertainty quantification in the three calendar years prior to the award year.

The SIAM Activity Group on Nonlinear Waves and Coherent Structures (SIAG/NWCS) awards the T. Brooke Benjamin Prize every two years to one mid-career established researcher for recent outstanding work on a topic in nonlinear waves, as evidenced by a body of work with at least one significant publication in English in a peer-reviewed journal within the four calendar years preceding the award year.
