Joint Prizes

The George B. Dantzig Prize is awarded ever three years to one or more individuals for original research which by its originality, breadth, and depth is having a major impact on the field of mathematical optimization. MOS administers the prize and it is awarded jointly by MOS and SIAM.

The George David Birkhoff Prize recognizes outstanding contributions to applied mathematics in the highest and broadest sense. The prize is administered by AMS and awarded jointly by SIAM and AMS.

The Gerald and Judith Porter Public Lecture is given every year at the Joint Mathematics Meetings on a mathematical topic accessible to the broader community. The Porter Public Lecture series is offered jointly by the MAA, AMS, and SIAM. The Gerald and Judith Porter Public Lecture Series was established through the generosity and inspiration of Gerald and Judith Porter. Gerald Porter is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania and has served the MAA as Treasurer, as a member of the Board of Governors for 22 years, and as a member and chair of numerous committees. Judith Porter is Professor Emerita of Sociology at Bryn Mawr College. Her research focuses on the relationship between AIDS and addiction. 

The Joint Policy Board for Mathematics (JPBM) established the JPBM Communications Award in 1988 to reward and encourage communicators who, on a sustained basis, bring mathematical ideas and information to non-mathematical audiences. Since 2016, the prize may be awarded in two categories: For Public Outreach and For Expository and Popular Books. Up to two awards are made annually. The nominating committee consists of one representative from each member society of the JPBM. The committee's selection process is chaired by the society chairing JPBM for the year. JPBM is a collaborative effort of SIAM, the American Mathematical Society (AMS), the American Statistical Association (ASA), and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).

The Lagrange Prize in Continuous Optimization is awarded every three years for an outstanding contribution in the area of continuous optimization published in the six calendar years prior to the award year. The MOS administers the prize and it is awarded jointly by MOS and SIAM. The award is based primarily on the work's mathematical quality, significance, and originality. Clarity and excellence of the exposition and the value of the work in practical applications may be considered as secondary attributes. The extended period of six years reflects the fact that the value of fundamental work cannot always be immediately assessed.

The MAA-SIAM-AMS Hrabowski-Gates-Tapia-McBay (HGTM) Lecture is presented annually to an individual who helps to systematically recruit, welcome, encourage, mentor, and support individuals from underrepresented groups in the U.S. Through multiple mechanisms, these sessions expect to facilitate and accelerate the participation of scientists in the building of sustainable communities of mathematicians and mathematical scientists.

The Norbert Wiener Prize in Applied Mathematics recognizes outstanding contributions to applied mathematics in the highest and broadest sense. The prize is administered by the AMS and awarded jointly by AMS and SIAM.

The Peter Henrici Prize is awarded every four years at the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM) jointly by ETH Zurich and SIAM. It is awarded for original contributions to applied analysis and numerical analysis and/or for exposition appropriate for applied mathematics and scientific computing. The award is intended to recognize broad and extended contributions to these subjects more than for a single outstanding work.

The Pioneer Prize is awarded every four years at the ICIAM Congress to one individual for pioneering work introducing applied mathematical methods and scientific computing techniques to an industrial problem area or a new scientific field of application. Established on the initiative of SIAM, it is one of five prizes administered and awarded by ICIAM. The prize is currently funded by SIAM.
