SIAM Student Travel Awards are here to help students gain the experience and exposure that comes from attending and presenting at SIAM conferences.
For all hybrid conferences, support will be prioritized for those attending the conference in-person. For all virtual conferences, support will be made in the form of registration waivers.
SIAM offers conference support for student participants at SIAM conferences. The awards (unless otherwise noted in the award letter) come with free registration.
SIAM Student Travel Awards consist of $650 for domestic travel and $800 for intercontinental travel. For conferences that do not include free registration, $50 is added to the award total.
For virtual conferences, support will be provided in the form of conference registration waivers.
Any full-time student in good standing is eligible to receive an award. Only students traveling more than 100 miles to the conference are eligible for an award.
The application process is competitive. The following factors are considered in ranking applicants.
Graduate students, especially those nearing completion of their program, tend to have a stronger record of scholarship. A student's research should be relevant to the topic/themes of the conference.
Students making a presentation will have priority over students who are non-presenting co-authors of a paper being presented. Non-presenting co-authors will have priority over students attending as observers.
If you are giving a presentation:
If there are co-author(s) of your paper or poster:
If you are presenting in a minisymposium:
The adviser will receive an auto-generated email from the SIAM Travel Awards program requesting the letter of recommendation and providing instructions on how to submit it. The student will not be able to upload the letter of recommendation as part of the application process. The student should submit their application early enough for their adviser to have time to submit the letter of recommendation before the deadline.
In the event that a travel awardee participates in a conference that is hybrid, support will be prioritized for those attending the conference in-person. If the conference is completely virtual, the travel award will be applied to a waiver of registration fees. Due to current uncertainties of in person events, please do not make travel arrangements until closer to the conference.

Complete applications should be submitted approximately seven months before the first day of the conference the applicant wishes to attend. On the deadline date, no application will be accepted after 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. In addition, for full consideration, applicants must submit the abstract of their paper or poster no later than seven months before the first day of the conference. The deadlines apply to all required application materials, and no late applications will be accepted.
Awardees will be notified by email five months before the first day of the meeting.
Travel outside of the U.S. under this program must comply with the Fly America Act. In some cases, the United States has entered into bilateral or multilateral “Open Skies” agreements with other nations. In these cases, The Fly America Act does not prohibit travel funded by civilian government agencies or carriers associated with these nations. For example, there are such agreements with the European Union (including non‑EU members Norway and Iceland), Canada, Australia, Switzerland, Israel, and Japan. See a full list of transportation agreements.
To obtain the support, the travel awardee must file an expense report, including all required receipts, within 30 days of the end of the conference. Reimbursements should be submitted via SIAM's Online Reimbursement Portal. Please download the Expense Report Form and submit it along with all corresponding receipts via the portal.
Applying for conference support is a separate process from submitting an abstract for presentation. Applying for conference support does NOT submit your abstract for consideration for presentation. Similarly, your abstract will not be automatically withdrawn if you are not granted a travel award. To submit an abstract, click on the "Submissions" link at the web page of the conference in which you plan to participate.
Funds are limited, so a student may expect to receive at most one travel award per year. Due to limited funds, an adviser may expect no more than one student to receive an award to any given conference.
